Alpha Zeta wines Veneto, Northern Italy
Winemaker: Matt Thomson
Alpha Zeta
wines: The man behind the label
Matt
Thomson shows just how good a winemaker he is with the 2002 Alpha Zeta
wines. Working with selected parcels of grapes where we had managed to convince
growers to reduce yields and pick later (and, as a result, riper) he has
produced some startlingly good wines.
When Matt arrived in Verona in
late August, he was rather concerned by the lack of sun. When he left at the
end of October, he was delighted by the quality of what he had produced. The
key - as with the Cantina di Custoza - has been to gain access to the growers
and their vineyards. By reducing yields and delaying picking by up to a
fortnight, we were able to obtain grapes with greatly amplified flavours. The
winemakers' role is to retain these flavours and this Matt has achieved
admirably.
New to the range this year is a
Pinot Grigio, which is a
remarkable wine for a Pinot Grigio from the Veneto.
The 2003 Soave is the best yet, eclipsing
previous vintages made by Matt with its ripe, fruity character.
The
2003 Valpolicella is the best we've yet
produced. It has a wonderfully vibrant and damsony fruit that gives way to a
fleshy, rounded character that is impossible to find in other Valpolicella at
this price. The Corvina, deep, rich spicy and supple, is
a revelation.
The innovative approach evident in the wines is maintained
in the packaging, which is simple yet striking. The entire Alpha Zeta range is
sealed with synthetic cork.
