Anubis wines Mendoza, Argentina
Anubis wines: some background The 2002 vintage
in Mendoza was outstanding. "The best I've seen since I started working in
Argentina," said Alberto Antonini who, along with Susana Balbo,
one of Argentina's most dynamic winemakers, continues to make Anubis one of
Argentina's most exciting producers. In 2002, Anubis was made in Susana's new
winery, Dominio de la Plata. As in previous years, the fruit was sourced in
Agrelo and Vistalba, the heart of the best vineyards in Mendoza. This quality
is evident in the wines, which have a balance of tannin, aroma and flavour that
is quite unique in Argentina.
The Chardonnay, part of
which is barrel-fermented, has great richness allied to a touch of class,
offering the sort of quality and value the Aussies offered 5 years
ago.
The Malbec has wonderful colour and a dark, plummy
fruit that seems to last forever. The Tempranillo is stunning:
deep-coloured with intense damsony fruit on the nose, great balance and
structure on the palate. It finishes long and elegantly. Wines like this make
pricier Rioja look commercially obsolete.
The
Syrah/Bonarda is an unusual but wonderful blend in which the supple,
rounded Bonarda softens the brambly fruit of the Syrah. Until recently regarded
as nothing more than a workhorse, Bonarda, a native of north-western Italy, has
proved, when grown in good vineyard areas and handled properly, that it can
produce wines of real class.
On its own, the Bonarda is a
delight.
