Brokenwood vineyard & wines Hunter Valley, NSW,
Australia
Brokenwood vineyard:
Background Brokenwood is one of Australia's most outstanding
producers. Based in the Hunter, this property is justly renowned for the wines
from their own Graveyard vineyard. The Shiraz in particular, is a
stunning example of the classic Hunter style. Iain Riggs, winemaker at
Brokenwood since 1983, has, over the years, built upon this reputation with
wines from other regions.
The Shiraz is partnered by the classic
Hunter style as represented by the Brokenwood Semillons. The 2002 (the
2000 was White Wine of the Year in the authoritative Penguin Guide to
Australian Wine) is vibrant yet ripe. Unoaked, it is a wonderful food wine. We
only get small quantities of the I.L.R. Reserve Semillon. The 1997 is
similar in style to the 1996, though showing a touch less evolution at the
moment. Brokenwood is increasing production of this wine, but as it is held for
five years before being released, it will be a while before we get hold of an
increased allocation. A selection of the best vineyards on sandy soil in the
Hunter, the wine is fermented in stainless steel, bottled young and then aged
in bottle until its release.
Last year they added 2001
Chardonnay from the Forest Edge Vineyard in Orange. Grown at
altitude, this wine has been given added complexity by the treatment it
received from P.J. Charteris. It has a funky, gun-smoke nose with good depth
and length on the palate.
The Cricket Pitch red and white
are both delicious, with balance and length and the pristine flavours of the
varieties shining through in the glass.
