Kim Crawford
wines Marlborough, New Zealand
Kim
Crawford wines: a short profile Since starting in 1996, Kim
Crawford's label has grown dramatically. Despite this, quality has continued to
improve, largely because Kim has invested heavily in vineyards. He now has a
stake in about 250 acres of vineyard, while most of the rest of his fruit comes
from growers with whom he has developed a profit sharing arrangement, something
that means he can ask the grower to reduce yields or pick exactly when Kim
decides the time is right. All of this has resulted in better fruit, which in
turn means better wines.
2002 was an outstanding vintage for Kim
Crawford's wines. They had wonderful aromas combined with superb depth and
balance on the palate. 2003 was a smaller and more difficult vintage in general
in Marlborough, but Kim is happy that the quality of his wines will at least be
the equal of the 02s. And the purity of the flavours he has captured in his
wines will once again be preserved by the Stelvin (screw-cap) closures. Since
moving to Stelvin, Kim's wines have increased in sales, for the improved
freshness and consistency has enhanced the wines' appeal.
