Rozendal Stellenbosch,
South Africa Winemaker: Kurt Ammann

Rozendal: winery profile by Richard Kelley MW Swiss
born Kurt Ammann is one of the Cape's best kept secrets. Not just his wine, but
the Auberge that he runs on the estate is still the finest place to dine in
Stellenbosch. He bought the farm in 1981 with his wife Lyne and within the
first two years had produced one of the finest red wines ever produced in the
Cape with his 1983 Rozendal. In the early 1990's they adopted a more
homeopathic approach and had developed into a fully biodynamic operation by
1999. The wines remain uncertified, as the inclusion of grapes from a
neighbouring farm which doesn't practise such ideals prevents any official
claims; however, from the 2003 vintage, Rozendal is only made from grapes off
the farm. We shipped the 2000 last year, but it arrived in a sullen state which
we attribute to the use of minimal sulphur levels. The wine has required a
period of hibernation and is only now beginning to show its true potential.
