The young Louis Barruol has
quickly emerged as one of the Southern Rhône's most talented young
winemakers. He has taken the St. Cosme offerings, particularly Gigondas, to the
top of the qualitative hierarchy. Moreover, his négociant line-up
is impressive, although quantities are small.
There is also a bevy of great
bargains , particularly at the Côtes du
Rhône level. The St. Cosme 1999 Côtes du Rhône (7,000
cases), produced from old Syrah vines planted in the Rhône's northern
sector, remained in tank prior to being bottled unfiltered. Its opaque purple
colour is accompanied by a gorgeously sweet bouquet of blackberries, liquorice
and a touch of smoke. Medium to full-bodied and silky-textured, with good
freshness and remarkable levels of fruit and intensity, this 1999 Côtes
du Rhône may deserve an outstanding rating if it develops more
complexity. Enjoy it over the next 4 - 5 years. It represents a great
value. The Château St. Cosme 1999
Gigondas , (a blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 5%
Cinsault) is an outstanding wine. A dense opaque black/purple colour is
followed by sweet aromas of blackberry fruit, roasted meats, and cassis. Chewy,
powerful, full-bodied, superbly concentrated, pure, and well-balanced, it will
drink well for 10 - 14 years.
If readers
have not yet discovered this estate, the wines from St. Cosme are sure things,
particularly in such promising years as 1998 and 1999.
