Vergelegen wines Helderberg, Stellenbosch, South
Africa
Vergelegen's winemaker,
Andre van Rensburg: Profile André obtained his Hons.
B.Sc. Agric (Oenology), Cum Laude, at the University of Stellenbosch in 1987
under the prefessorship of Joel van Wyk. He spent time at Saxenburg, Kuilsriver
and was General Manager of Warwick in Muldersvlei from 1991 to 1993. Since
joining Stellenzicht as Winemaker in 1993, André has received numerous
awards for his wines. At the controversial SAA Australia vs. South Africa Wine
Competition, he was the only producer from either country to have two wines
placed (the Stellenzicht 1995 Sauvignon blanc and 1994 Syrah).
He
has become very well-known in the wine industry due to the production of the
Syrah wines at Stellenzicht, notwithstanding the fact that his 1996 Sauvignon
blanc was nominated as the S.A. Champion white wine.
It is
appropriate that André should take over the reins as Winemaker from
Martin Meinert at Vergelegen as he has been quoted as saying that he believes
that the Helderberg, with its maritime influence and varied soils, is the "best
red wine area in South Africa". With over 60% of the vineyards on Vergelegen
dedicated to red wines André will have ample opportunity to prove this
statement.
André joins Vergelegen at a very exciting time
when the vineyards, all of which were planted between 1989 and 1992, are coming
into maturity. With André as Winemaker, there is no doubt that wine
lovers, who have grown accustomed to the excellent wines from Vergelegen, will
view the future production with excitement. This excerpt was taken
