Webersburg wines Helderberg, Stellenbosch, South Africa Winemaker: Fred
Weber
Webersburg: winery profile by Richard Kelley
MW The Helderberg range of mountains, some 8km from the shores of
False Bay has the reputation for producing some of the best Bordeaux varieties
in the Cape. Rust-en-Vrede, Stellenzicht, Waterford, Cordoba and David Trafford
are among the leaders on this impressive mountain slope. Fred Weber is not a
wine man. He once owned the franchise for Toyota in Southern Africa and is now
heavily into property development. But Fred is very shrewd; he employs the
right people. Braam Steyn is recognised as one of the best viticulturists in
the Cape and the wines are made by Giorgia dalla Cia whilst moonlighting from
Meerlust. The first vintage, 1996 was a difficult one generally, but the
subsequent 1997 is now approaching maturity; the lighter 1999 is drinking well
now, whilst the 1998 (not yet shipped) was held back for further maturation.
Vines are all new clone Cabernet Sauvignon with plantings of Shiraz now coming
into production. A new maturation facility is also complete, thus allowing the
winery to have a home.
