Check out our updated wine list... Posted by Andrew Chapman, 2:31am 04/02/2004. We have just been updating our list, adding some new wines and deleting
a few that had got missed in the last update. But it's mostly new wines, and
some real corkers. Full list of latest arrivals
here...
Particularly
worth a look at are our new
German wines from the
2002 vintage - another corker of
a vintage there, plus some exciting new arrivals from
South Africa.
Two producers
worth an individual mention are
Foundry and
The Observatory, both from South Africa.
I tried both recently, while taking a post-Christmas break on the Suffolk coast
(only so I good get my fix of Adnams
beer into the bargain you understand!).
Foundry make two wines, but it
is the
Foundry Shiraz 2001that really leaps out at you for
sheer quality (although their
Double
Barrel is a really inspired and tasty blend too...). Both the Foundry
Shiraz and Observatory, which is also Syrah, really do show what can be
achieved in the Cape with this grape and low-yielding, well-managed vines and
sympathetic winemaking. Sympathetic in this case means letting the
concentrated, dark, brooding Syrah fruit do the talking - VERY
sensible!
Also, a South Africa white worthy of mention is the
Palladius from
Eben Sadie. Top-notch, balanced and
something a bit different in a world bursting at the seams with Sauvignon Blanc
and Chardonnay.
