Andrew on BBC Radio, Sunday 30.03.08Permalink

bbc_radio_oxfordFeeling horrible today with a particularly nasty cold. But I'm told they are famous germs from one of Alison's radio friends, so that has got to make it OK then, right?!

Talking of radio, cold or not, I'm getting all excited as I'm back on Louisa Hannan's Sunday morning show on BBC Radio Oxford this week (30.03.08). We did a great show back in February (hoping to get a recording of that to go onto Surf4Wine when I go in on Sunday), so I've been itching to go back (it's usually bi-monthly)

Louisa used to work with Alison when Alison was a producer and presenter at BBC Oxford, so I know her and it's not too daunting, in fact it is pretty relaxed and we have a lot of fun. Oli Richings, from local country house hotel Fallowfields is joining us this week, so it will be very much wine AND food.

So, if you are near a radio on Sunday (it's on 95.2FM), or can get BBC Radio Oxford via the internet (it goes out live online, see link to BBC iPlayer on this this page), then tune in and give us a listen.

Now, thinking cap on Andrew... wines to go with Duck egg omelet (eggs, oh great, nice clash there. Red wine hates eggs usually. Anyone got any good ideas?)

Italy's 50 greatest winesPermalink

Decanter Magazine - Italy's greatest ever wines

The April issue of Decanter magazine has a great feature on Italy's 50 greatest wines

- and I was thrilled to see Cepparello, Isole e Olena at No. 6.

Isole e Olena, run by Paolo de Marchi, has seen a dramatic rise in quality over the last few decades. Paolo's family, originally from Piedmont, purchased the estate in the 1960s. His attention to detail in both the vineyard and the winery was the driving force that turned quality around. Experience working a vintage or two in California helped, but no doubt the input received from oenological consultant Donato Lanati has also been of significance.

The wines have Cepparello at their head - "what Isole e Olena is all about" - a barrique-aged Sangiovese classified as an IGT - because at the time of it's creation in the 1980s a wine comprising 100% Sangiovese could not legally be labelled as Chianti.

Isole e Olena is justly recognised as one of the top Chianti estates. Paolo and his team work incredibly hard to make fabulous wines (well, in my humble opinion!), so it is great to see them rewarded with an award like this.

Isole e Olena weren't the only wines from our wine list to score big. Felsina Rancia Riserva, Chianti Classico and Pieropan la Rocca, Soave Classico Superiore were also both in the top half of the list with multiple nominations from the judges. Flaccianello della Pieve IGT, Fontodi and ‘Bucerchiale' Chianti Rufina Riserva, Selvapiana were alos in the list with single nominations from individual judges.

All in all, not a bad tally. Looks like our Italian section is starting to rock!

Do you get wine Wine Library TV?Permalink
Posted by Andrew Chapman in News and Comments - March 26th 9:19am. Leave a comment

Have you caught the 'Thunder' yet? In case you haven't, check it out: Wine Library TV.

The web phenomenon that is Gary Vaynerchuck is sweeping all before it (use of 'phenomenon' is deliberate - Gary V is all over the web at the moment, from new media and technology conferences to his own web site, not forgetting Twitter posts every few minutes. Does he ever sleep??). Great article on Gary here: Wine, Video and the Cult of Gary

Definitely worth telling more people about Gary and his Thunder shows, and happy to try to do that on our little 'ole blog :)

Gary also posts on his personal web site, with some great insights about getting the passion out there. With honesty! And yes, I'm aware most wine bloggers will already know about Gary - I'm hoping we can let a few non-blogging wine drinkers know about him too. Although I'd say they could probably hear him 'Thundering' in America all the way over here in not so sunny UK - even without the internet! Yup, that Gary sure is loud - but hey, he loves his wine and wants you all to know. And that's all good in my book.

Surf4Wine on Twitter... plus some changes to our BlogPermalink
Posted by Andrew Chapman on March 26th 7:43am. Leave a comment

twitterI've been 'Twittering' via Twitter for a while now, on everything from what wine I've been buying for Surf4Wine, through to what I'm doing for the week-end (including what I've been tasting and drinking) - and I've met some great people over there. If you haven't got the twitter bug yet, find out more here, here and here - it might not be for everyone, but it can be pretty addictive!

It's a great way to keep people up-to-date with all the goings on here in Surf4Wine, and heaps of other stuff out there that might be interesting. And it's quick and easy for news in bite-sized chunks. An immediate take on the world as it is right now. Follow me on Twitter (you'll need a Twitter account if you don't already have one).

The whole Twitter might not be for you, but you might be interested in some of my Twitterings (especially as there will be the odd special offer over there, plus promo codes from time to time as we roll out the latest new developments here at Surf4Wine). So, to make life a tad easier, we have added my Twitter posts to the right hand side of our main Blog page. That way you don't miss out, but don't have to jump straight into the twitter-universe either.

Couple of other changes to our main Blog while I'm here: Like most Blogs we now have a ' Category' list to sort our various Blog posts into useful sub-categories to make it easier to find stuff. And now also an archive of our older posts if you want to go back and find something. Plus we've beefed up of social book marking links to make it easier to save any of our posts to your favourite place online. All helpful we hope :)

There's other cool stuff planned too - both on the Blog and around Surf4Wine. We'll Blog all the updates and changes here first, so why not bookmark or Blog, or subscribe to us via our RSS feed (and don't worry, I didn't know what the heck an RSS feed was until we started blogging: find out more here.) Thank you BBC!) Catch you later...

10:52am Twitter coming of age: http://tinyurl.com/3nklu7. Story via BBC/Robert Scoble. I'm a news junkie and tech-lover, so nice overlap for me :)

10:14am @gabriellaopaz I guess Watermelons are important, eh?

9:07am Andrew wants to break out the Bar-B-Q for supper tonight, Alison says Risotto with chicken from yesterday. 'Yes wife' is the correct reply!

9:06am I could almost believe we are going to have a good Summer if this weather continues!

11:06am 11/05 Gorgeous day here in sunny Oxfordshire UK. Gonna have to brave sun and cut grass - time for hayfever drugs...
