| Buckshot Vineyard |
Heathcote |
|
Rob Peebles starting making wine in
1993, working with the legendary Mick Morris in Rutherglen, and joined Domaine
Chandon in 1997. In 1999 Rob secured the fruit from a 60 year old Shiraz block
(the oldest in Heathcoat); dry grown & cropped between 1 and 2 tonnes to
the acre. Then in 2001 they added the fruit from a newer vineyard in 2001 and
the Buckshot Shiraz was released. Total production is 400 cases. |
| Clancy Fuller |
Barossa |
|
A three way partnership between
Peter Fuller, Paul Clancy & Helen Martin. The wines are made from a small
patch of 120 year old Shiraz vines owned by Peter Fuller and a small patch of
old vine Grenache owned by Paul Clancy. Chris Ringland of Rockfords makes the
wines. Only 500 cases of each wine are made every year, with 50 cases of each
coming to the UK. |
| Diggers Bluff |
Barossa |
|
A small partnership between Robert
O'Callaghans two sons - Travis & Tim - who have been given access to a
small vineyard of old vine Shiraz. The vines are attended to by Tim, and the
wines then made by him at their Marananga winery. The wine is aged until the
two brothers feel that it is ready to drink. Only 50 cases are allocated to the
UK. |
| Hobbs |
Barossa |
|
Greg Hobbs - ex-marksman with the
Adelaide police, purchased a small neglected block of very old vine Shiraz -
which happened to by the same block of fruit Chris Ringland uses for his Three
Rivers Shiraz. The wine is made at Trevor Jones's winery - with Chris
consulting. It is gaining cult status in Australia. I would rate higher than
Grange or Hill of Grace as a glass of wine. |

The brightest figure currently in
the Australian wine scene - family vineyards, very old blocks of fruit,
ex-Grange material. The Clarry's white is quite exceptional. Very high Parker
points. A further allocation of the other wines will be made on their
release. |
| Massena |
Barossa |
|
The joint venture between two of the
most dynamic young Barossa winemakers - Jaysen Collins is the General manager
of Turkey Flat vineyards (previous with St Hallet) & Dan Standish, who is
the wine maker with Torbreck & also has The Standish Wine Company. High
scoring Parker point wines - will only get better with each vintage. |
| Mt. Billy |
Barossa |
|
John Edwards owns the vineyards, Dan
Standish has been making the wines at Torbreck - James Halliday rated the 2002
Shiraz 96 points, only 1 wine scored 97 points. Torbreck The Factor 2002 also
scored 96 and that currently retails well over £50 a bottle. Also the
2002 Harmony scored 4 stars. |

Christian Canute, winemaker, is
Chris Ringland protégée. His parents, Denis & Christine,
purchased a 40 acre property in the centre of the Barossa valley with many old
neglected vineyards. The wines are incredibly well balanced - see Parker
reviews. |

Jason's father Ian is a successful
independent grower, with over 100 acres of vineyards in the valley. In 2001
Jason persuaded his dad to let him play with a ton of fruit from the Nitschke
Block vineyard - a Shiraz vineyard over the road from Turkey Flat that was
planted in 1967 - to make some home brew. The results were very impressive, and
Jason has added a Thiele Road Grenache to his nascent range. Parker scored the
first vintage of the Nitschke Block Shiraz 96 points. |
| Spinifex |
Barossa |
|
Peter Schell established Spinifex
2001 with the ambition to hand make wines from ultra-select vineyards in the
finest terroirs of the Barossa Valley. Spinifex wines are produced from old (50
to120 years) and low yielding Shiraz, Mataro (Mourvedre), Grenache and Cinsaut
vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The focus of winemaking is to
produce harmonious, richly textured wines with complex ripe fruit flavours for
which the great wines of the Barossa are renowned. Again Robert Parker scored
the first vintages very highly. |
| Teusner |
Barossa |
|
Kym Teusner is the red wine maker at
Veritas winery in the Barossa - Teusner wines were established when Kym
overheard his uncle saying that he would have re-plant his low yielding, old
Grenache vineyard as the big boys were not paying enough to make the fruit
viable. Kym borrowed the money & created Teusner in 2001. These wines are
gaining a real following in both the UK & USA. |
| Torzi Matthews |
Barossa |
|
Domenic Torzi & Tracey Matthews
established their small 10 acre property in the Mt McKenzie sub-region of Eden
Valley in 1996. As well as producing award winning olive oils, they have since
2002 produced an Amarone style Shiraz, roughly 2/3rd of the grapes are aired
dried prior to be fermented with the freshly picked remaining fruit. In 2004
they added a Riesling to the range, which in Australia has beaten Grosset on a
couple of occasions. |

This is a joint venture between
Andrew Wardlaw (right), who in a previous life was a viticulturist working with
Henschke, and Peter Clarke, chef/owner of Vintners restaurant in Angaston. They
starting making wines together in 1998. Andrew has travelled a bit - including
spells in Burgundy, Alsace and the Northern Rhône - and seems to have a
clear idea of the sorts of wines he wants to make. They're quite different to
the traditional big, ripe, chocolatey, rather oaky reds that the Barossa has
made its name with. Instead the emphasis is more on elegance and definition.
Andrew is non-interventionist and the wines are made using natural yeast
ferments and unobtrusive oak influence. |
